Netgear selects Marvell’s media vault processor
Thursday, 11 January 2007 00:34 .Jan 11 -- Marvell Semiconductor Inc. has announced that the company’s Orion 88F5182 media vault processor has been selected for the new Netgear Inc.’s Storage Central Turbo, a upgradeable networked attached storage device which functions like a local disk drive and is accessible from any network computer. The Orion media vault processor delivers fail-safe affordable, shareable, turbo gigabit speeds for music, photos, video and data, the company said.
The Orion Media Vault 88F5182 allows consumers to consolidate, manage and access multimedia and data content throughout the home, according to Marvell of Santa Clara, California. With rock-solid, home-wide Quality of Service (QoS), the 88F5182 delivers true, uninterrupted multi-streaming performance, the company said on Monday.
The Storage Central Turbo, SC101T, is a high-performance, affordable networked storage solution, which is designed to meet the sharable data backup and storage needs of consumers and small businesses, Netgear said. The Storage Central Turbo features a Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) interface that enables users to quickly and easily transfer, share and store music, photos, data files, and video across the network, according to the Santa Clara, California-based company. The SC101T also supports two 3.5-inch Serial ATA (SATA) disk drives of any capacity, makes real-time copies of stored data on two separate hard drives to protect against data loss, which will provide users with the ideal mirrored centralized storage solution, the company said.
Netgear is committed to delivering products that give its customers the security and stability for their data and content, while delivering maximum speeds, ease of configuration and a clear growth path, Netgear said. When looking for a silicon vendor with expertise in networking and storage, Marvell was the right choice, the company said. Netgear is excited to team with Marvell on another product which enriches the customer's digital lifestyle, Netgear added.
Marvell aims at offering multimedia which is accessible at consumer price points, which is becoming a reality with products like the Netgear Storage Central Turbo SC101T, Marvell said. By partnering with a tier one company such as Netgear, Marvell is enabling processing, connectivity and storage technology beyond available NAS products, and creating a new class of consumer storage products, Marvell added.
The Marvell Orion family of media vault processors are designed to provide networking, storage, and media serving controller solutions for the consumer, Small Office/Home Office (SOHO), and Small and Medium-Sized Business (SMB) markets. Based on Marvell's ARM-compliant, high-performance, custom-designed microprocessor, the Orion family meets the performance demands of various network storage and media serving applications, Marvell said.
The Orion Media Vault comes packaged with an extensible, open-source, plug-and-play (PnP) Linux 2.6-based software development kit (SDK), which supports a variety of applications and middleware, providing customers and partners with quick time-to-market solutions, Marvell said. The Orion platforms deliver performance and features in a cost-effective footprint targeting set top boxes, triple play gateways, and media vault applications, the company added.
